“All night and day
Just chippin’ away
It’s all in a day’s work
Tryin’ hard to defend
The time that I spend alone”
Almost instantly you are taken to a place of strength in this woman’s ability to commit to herself. Logos is used here to connect the audience to her strong sense of commitment. Commitment is a value held in high regard to most. With the easy tone of Chaka’s voice in this introductory verse, it is easy to make this connection. Although we don’t know what she is chippin away at, it is clear that her work is significant and not an easy task. As humans we are all too familiar with working hard toward our goals. Taking it a step further, and looking at how this plays out for woman, this endeavour at times can be daunting in a unique way saved especially for us. As history has proven the work of a women as a nurturer, mother, wife, lover, friend, provider and the many other roles that are given to us can be emotionally and physically delpleting. Finding those moments for self are truly a battle, and with the pressures of society, alone time can seem as failure at times. Keeping busy has proven to be the mantra of woman through out the ages. However, keeping self close through times proves the blessing in the first four verses and resonates with the fight woman continue to have in doing so.
